Munich Asamchurch

Documentary

For this Baroqueblockbuster episode, Constantin Pelka enters the Asamkirche — a private baroque chapel built by brothers Egid Quirin and Cosmas Damian Asam between 1733 and 1746 on a narrow side street in Munich's old town, adjacent to their own home, with no patron's brief to constrain them. Measuring barely nine by 22 metres inside, the church was designed around a single concept: every surface exists to catch and reflect light, but only in near-darkness does the full effect reveal itself. Two of the most prolific baroque artists on the continent, no client, no institutional constraints — the result is one of the most extreme interior spaces in European baroque art.
